Essential Tools You’ll Need
Before we dive into the process, you’ll need a few tools to start off. Here’s a list of them:

Step 1 of 5: Figuring The Right Spot For Your Sauna
We’ve already established our place, the basement. But where do we start? To make this a little simple, a corner will be perfect.
Why a corner you ask? This is because we already have two out of four walls there. This will therefore be cost-effective for you. Moreover, this will also save your time and energy.
Furthermore, another benefit is that the exterior walls let the air escape. Hence, the corner will be your perfect spot.
Step 2 of 5: Measure And Frame Your Wall
Your sauna size will determine your material cost and amount. So you’ll have to measure your space. According to that measurement, buy your materials.
It can be a big one if it fits your budget. Or even a small one. Just like your shower measurement, go for whatever fits your purpose well!
Frame your wall vertically and line them horizontally. Leave off a 4-inch gap between your exterior wall and sauna wall. Then, set your walls and your ceiling accordingly.
When hanging your sauna door, keep one thing in mind. Make sure your door frame has a 4-inch gap. That is, in between your basement floor and door’s bottom edge.
Step 3 of 5: Connect Your Power Lines
Let’s install the heater power lines. But first, decide on your heater size. After you’ve done deciding, run the power line through it. Maintain all the electrical requirements and you’ll be all set there.

Step 4 of 5: Install Your Sauna Walls
For the walls, you’re going to need ½-inch plywood. It’ll be installed on the exterior walls, floors, and ceiling. Make sure to put those in tightly, because you don’t want your wall to fall out like your bed slats.
To customize it according to your style, you can paint or stain the wood.
Moreover, you can use panels from a sauna DIY kit to install your wall. After that, put up your plywood. This will make your sauna more robust. Next, install the cedar boards on your interior walls.
Create tongue-and-groove edges on these boards. Use a bench saw to do this. Then use zinc plated screws to fasten them on. This will better hold the steam in your sauna as it’s a tighter fit.
We install this added layer to better protect the wall underneath. Even though we want a sauna, we can’t damage our walls. Just like how we should carpet tile without actually harming it.
Step 5 of 5: Install Your Heater
The best place to install your heater is in a corner of the sauna. Or in the middle of the floor. Before buying the heater, make sure it’s designed for a sauna.

Now that you’ve made your choice, it’s time to install your heater. The temperature should be set to 185°F. Don’t set it anywhere over 220°F or else it’ll be a health risk. After you’re all done, just set back and start relaxing!
