Furnishing An Apartment: Full Breakdown & Analysis
Getting an apartment is certainly super exciting. After all, there’s a lot of hard work involved. Average Americans grind a lot to get their apartment and it’s really special.
But it doesn’t end there. After securing a nice place, you need to worry about many things. Some people choose to renovate the interiors or remodel bathrooms and kitchens etc.
Furnishing an apartment may seem easier compared to remodeling or renovating. But it’s quite the opposite when you actually try to do it. There’s a lot of options involved and under budget, it can be pretty stressful.
But there is one thing common in every house project and that’s the cost factors. No matter what you do, there’s always a cost factor that decides almost everything.
Like, you have to calculate the total cost to remodel a bathroom. Because otherwise, you may overspend on something less important. As a result, the entire project gets jeopardized for a single mistake.
Making similar mistakes is pretty easy when furnishing a house. In fact, way too easy.
Because furnishing a house involves a lot of furniture. That’s why it’s super easy to get carried away.
Furnishing a house usually costs between $3,500 to $30,000. But you can go for more luxurious options too. In that case, you can spend a total of $95,000 or more on furnishing.
There’s a lot to choose from and for all rooms. Overspending is your biggest enemy in furnishing a house. That’s why I’ve decided to categorize the process in different ways.
This allows further simplification and lets me discuss many viable options within a budget. Sit back, relax and go through the categories and subcategories one by one.
By the end, you’re going to have a clearer picture of apartment furnishing.
Furnishing Cost By Rooms
Calculating costs by room is a great way to estimate the total. Since there can be different sizes of apartments, it’s the most effective way. That’s why I’ve chosen this method over others.
First thing first, take a note of how many rooms you’ve got. Apartments can be studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedrooms. Because of that, it’s easier to count the total by room.
With that said, let’s not linger around any longer and get started!
A living room is common in all sorts of apartments. It can be big or small depending on the total square footage. Either way, let’s talk about what sort of furniture you can add.
The average cost to furnish a living room costs around $1,000 to $35,000. The total depends on taste and the theme. If you want something fancy, you can spend $20,000 with your eyes closed.
For your convenience, I’ve made you a small table-
Like I’ve told you, it’s really easy to spend a ton on furniture. And this is for a single room by the way.
The living room is supposed to hold the essence. Spending a little extra is fine in that regard.
With that said, you can also carpet the entire room if you want to. In that case, you have to calculate the cost to carpet a room.
But one thing you need to be aware of is the budget. Just make sure spending extra doesn’t hurt your budget too much. Because otherwise, it’ll be a serious problem.
After the living room, your primary concern should be your bedroom. A nice apartment must have a really nice bedroom. After all, this is where you’re going to relax and sleep.
That’s why you can go easy on this one. Luckily there’s a lot of options to consider. And if you live in a studio apartment, the overall cost will be less.
An average American spends about $1,000 to $15,000 for a master bedroom. The more room you have, the more it’s going to cost you.
Luckily, you have me and for you, I’ve brought everything to one place. Take a look at the chart I’ve made just for you-
|Table Lamps x2||$30||$400||$800|
The total cost for bedrooms mainly depends on the bed that you choose. Other than the bed, it’s super easy to spend a lot on dressers and nightstands.
If your budget is tight, focus on dressers and nightstands first. That way you can multiple other accessories easily. But don’t go light on a mattress because comfort shouldn’t be compromised.
To help you out, I’ve picked some of my favorites for you-
This should help you choose one and get it done with!
If your apartment has a dining room, you’ve to make a separate category. This will focus on that room and make sure it’s furnished properly.
Unlike living or bedrooms, you don’t have to spend a lot on a dining room. But that doesn’t mean you can’t. For a family of two, the dining room doesn’t require too many chairs.
But for a family of four or six, it may require extra chairs which increases the cost. But there is always a cheaper option so nothing to be worried about.
For a dining room, expect to pay between $1,200 and $17,000 on average. This cost includes a dining table, chairs, rugs, curtains, etc.
Like before, I’ve come forward and made you another table to look at-
You can see that it takes about $5,000 on average to furnish the dining. But for a studio or one-bedroom apartment, $1,200 is more than enough.
The dining room can also cost more or less depending on the kitchen layouts. Some of the costs will be included in the total cost of remodeling a kitchen.
If you’re living in a two-bedroom or three-bedroom apartment, it’ll cost more. You can always choose a budget option for these bedrooms.
Or, you can choose to keep everything up to the standard. This will cost you a hefty amount of money. But the apartment will feel balanced and not out of the place.
For two additional bedrooms, expect to pay between $2,000 and $25,000. To keep everything simple, I’m going to make two different charts. This will help you understand better.
Here’s what you should be anticipating-
|Table Lamps x2||$30||$200||$800|
That was for a single bedroom. This bedroom cost the same in mid-range and budget range. But it costs less in the high range.
Since it’s not the master bedroom, there’s no need to spend extra there. But you’re always welcome if you want to do it.
The calculation is a problem and it can be a bit messy. That’s why I’ve made another table if there’s a 2nd and 3rd bedroom in your apartment.
This is what you’re looking for-
|Master Bed x2||$300||$2,000||$5,000|
|Table Lamps x4||$60||$400||$1,600|
|Window Curtains (2 sets)||$100||$300||$800|
|Styling Accessories (2 sets)||$300||$1,000||$4,000|
This is the maximum amount of money you’re going to spend. These should cover your entire furnishing completely.
Other than living, dining, and bedrooms there can be hallways. So make sure you have extras if you’re furnishing them.
Total Furnishing Cost By Size
Other than rooms, there’s another way to estimate the total. This calculation is size-based. Although it’s slightly vague, this provides an interesting insight.
The average cost to furnish a 2-bedroom apartment is $26,000. It’ll increase further if there are more rooms.
Here’s a small table for you-
These are the estimates you’re looking at. Based on your choices of furniture and your creativity, the final price will differ.
You can also save some more money by moving furniture yourself. For example, it’s fairly easy to move a mattress through a door. But for heavy furniture, it’s best to hire a service.
Question: How much does it cost to furnish an apartment from IKEA?
Answer: IKEA furniture is cheap but easily affordable. Furnishing your apartment with IKEA furniture can be done within $3,000. But they’re not that durable. Still, for the price range, they’re a top choice.
Question: How long does it take to furnish an apartment?
Answer: If you hire a service, it should take about 6 to 8 hours. Services will charge hourly and they like to finish it within a certain period. If you decide to do it yourself, it may take several days. Sometimes it may even take weeks depending on your productivity.
Question: Should I hire a decoration expert before furnishing a house?
Answer: If you want something stylish and have the budget for it, then absolutely! Hiring a decorator can get you more insight into furniture and its placement. They can easily solve some problems that you may have trouble with for months.
That was everything on how much it costs to furnish an apartment. I hope that has cleared some of your confusion.
One last tip before you leave-
You’re always welcome to furnish the apartment by yourself. It’ll cost way less.
But servicemen can do it more efficiently. There is also less chance to damage your furniture.
Finally, have a nice day and happy furnishing!
