  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Pair of adjustable pliers
  • ⅝” Crescent wrenches
  • Trash bag
  • Lots of towels

Let’s start the process of installing the 90-degree elbow joint. We’ve given the instructions below.

Step 1: Turn Off The Electricity, Waterline And Detach Mounts

Turn off the electricity, waterline, and the water shut-off valve. If you can’t stop the water flow. It might be due to problems with the water shut-off valve.

After that, detach the dishwasher mount using a Phillips head screwdriver. The mounts would be located on the counter or side cabinets. Then unscrew it from the mounts.

Step 2: Cleaning The Area

Now, slide out the dishwasher from its place. There might be debris and dirt. Using a dry towel, clean the area of all the damp dirt and gunk. Take a trash bag, and clear it out.

It’s better to clean the area before you start working on the joints. It makes the process easier and keeps you clean while working.

Caution: Make sure you’re ensuring proper safety. Because the dangers of working with electrical appliances are very high. So, take proper measures and work cautiously!

Step 3: Taking The Elbow Joint Off

Now, use pliers and secure the elbow joint. Take the wrench, and loosen the nut that’s holding the inlet pipe to the joint.

After that, pull the inlet pipe free from the elbow joint. Take off the nut and ferrule from the pipe. Then, unscrew the coupling joint from the dishwasher pump.

Caution: Copper bends and kinks very easily. So, while doing this procedure, do not apply too much pressure. Or else, the elbow joint might bend and get stuck.

Step 4: Reinstalling The Elbow Joint

After getting the elbow joint off, check it for damages. If it’s okay then you have to reinstall it properly. If not, you’ll need to install a new one.

Now, slide the nut and ferrule to the inlet pipe about 1 inch or 2.5 cm inside. Insert the pipe into the 90-degree elbow joint with it facing upwards. The coupling fitting has to be in the upward position. Make sure the rubber gasket sealant is inserted inside.

Next, secure the elbow joint with a pair of pliers. Slide the nut towards the elbow joint and screw it in place with a wrench.

Now reinstall the coupling to the dishwasher pump. Check the tightness with pliers. You might need an additional 1 to ½ turn.

Step 5: Check The Connection For Leaks

After reinstalling the elbow joint, turn on the power and waterline. Run your dishwasher and check for any kind of water leakage.

After checking it’s okay, place your dishwasher back to its place. Check the gap between your dishwasher and countertop. If it’s alright then your work is finished.

That’s it! You’ve fixed your dishwasher’s 90-degree elbow joint leak.

Question: Can I use Teflon tape to secure the joints?

Answer: Nope! It’s better to not use tapes as it will loosen the tightness of the threads. This in turn will compromise the seal of the rubber gasket and cause a leak.

Question: Do new dishwashers need an air gap?

Answer: Yes, it’s definitely important. Otherwise, you’ll be violating the laws as well as the house codes. You might also find yourself getting a hefty fine from the home inspectors.

Question: Can overloading a dishwasher cause it to leak?

Answer: Yes, it actually can. Overloading your dishwasher would make your dishwasher work twice more. Thus the overfilled water may leak from the door instead of the outlet line.

That’s the whole process. Hope this will solve your dishwasher 90 degree elbow leak problem. If you’ve got further inquiries, you can call a professional plumber.
