Dishwashers happen to be one of the most important kitchen appliances. We usually connect dishwashers to our kitchen faucet for operation.
But it’s not possible without a proper faucet adapter.
That’s when some of us run into troubles requiring only a little information.
How to install or replace a dishwasher faucet adapter?
If you have an old faucet adapter, use a plier to remove it. After that, take the new adapter and insert it into the dishwasher coupler. If it fits, take it out. Use a proper gasket before screwing it to the faucet. If the adapter doesn’t match your faucet, you’ll need to get a new adapter.
Anyways, that was my brief answer on dishwasher faucet adapter replacement. Obviously, that wasn’t enough to explain everything properly.
That’s why I have elaborated further on this topic for you. Stay with me if you want to know more about faucet adapter installations or replacements.
What’s a Dishwasher Faucet Adapter?
Before we go any further, let’s have a look at the faucet adapters. If you’re new, this will help you understand the importance of the faucet adapters more.
There are two kinds of dishwashers that you can get on the market. There are fixed dishwashers that you install permanently in your kitchen. Faucet adapters aren’t an issue most of the time.
Because the specialist you hired is going to provide the perfect size. They’ll also install it for you.
But the problem arises when you get a portable dishwasher. Sometimes the provided faucet adapters do not match your faucet.
Although installing a portable dishwasher is quite easy, it’s impossible without compatible adapters. That’s when you’ll need to know what faucet adapters are.
Knowing that will help you understand what kind of faucet adapters you really need. Sometimes, you may have to get a new faucet instead.
What’s a dishwasher faucet adapter?
A faucet adapter is a device that makes a certain appliance compatible to use. In simple words, it helps you connect different appliances to your faucet. There are multiple types of faucet adapters. The male/male, female/female, and hose thread adapters are mostly used by homeowners.
For dishwashers, people mostly use female/male adapters. But it can differ depending on the faucet.
Installing or Replacing a Dishwasher Faucet Adapter: 2 Steps Method
Installing or replacing a dishwasher faucet adapter may seem confusing at first. And you’re not wrong on that count.
It can be quite problematic if you try to install it without prior information. For example, something simple as cleaning a Kenmore dishwasher filter can prove to be difficult.
That’s why I have simplified the process and elaborated on it for you. Simply go through all the steps and you’ll be done in no time.
Step 1: Remove the Old Faucet Adapter
If you already have an adapter installed, you’ll have to remove it first. Otherwise, you can skip to the next step directly.
Usually, most faucet adapters can be removed by bare hands. That depends on the tightening of the faucet adapter, obviously.
But you may want to grab a plier or a soft-joint plier just in case. With those, you can ensure a smooth removal.
Anyways, use the plier to remove the old faucet adapter from the faucet. When you’re done, you can install a new adapter in its place.
Don’t throw your old adapter away after the removal. Because you may need it if your new adapter doesn’t fit.
Speaking of faucet adapters, here are some of my best recommendations-
Pick whichever adapter you like more and get started!
Step 2: Check the Compatibility Of the Faucet Adapter
Before you start the installation process, you’ll have to check the compatibility. Otherwise, you may install the wrong adapter that won’t fit in your dishwasher’s coupler.
This step is optional if the faucet adapter comes with the dishwasher. It’s going to be compatible since it’s provided by the company.
But if you buy an aftermarket faucet adapter, a compatibility check is a must.
Take the faucet adapter and the coupler of your dishwasher. After that, press the coupling lock and put the male end of the adapter.
Make sure the adapter fits perfectly and doesn’t wiggle.
If the faucet adapter is compatible, it’ll fit right in. And that means you can use it as a faucet adapter. Take the adapter out when you’re done.
Step 3: Install the Faucet Adapter
Since you’ve verified the faucet adapter, you can start the installation. Installing a faucet adapter is really easy, almost as easy as resetting a Kitchenaid dishwasher.
Most faucet adapters come with two different gaskets.
The first one is the thicker gasket and the other one is thinner. Both are useful depending on your faucet’s threads.
If there are too many threads, the adapter will go too far. In that case, you’ll need to use a thicker gasket. Otherwise, use the thinner gasket.
Turn the faucet adapter counterclockwise until it gets enough thread. When you feel resistance, stop turning the adapter.
And you’re done!
What To Do If Your Dishwasher Faucet Adapter Doesn’t Fit?
If your dishwasher faucet adapter doesn’t fit on your tap, that’s bad news. But it’s nothing too terrible. In fact, you can easily fix it.
Since it’s quite a common problem, I have explained it as briefly as possible.
Step 1: Find the Size Of Your Faucet
If your adapter doesn’t fit, you’ll have to know the accurate size. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to do that.
First, remove the faucet’s aerator from the faucet. After that, measure the diameter of your faucet. In most cases, male ends are in 15/16”-27 size. The female ends usually come in 55/64”-27 size.
Find out the size of your faucet and you’ll be one step closer.
Step 2: Determine the Faucet Thread
You’ll also have to determine the faucet type. If your faucet is male, you’ll need a female adapter. You’ll need a male adapter if your faucet has female threads.
But how do you realize what thread your faucet has? It’s pretty simple. If your faucet has threads on the outside, it’s a male faucet. Likewise, if the threads are on the inside, you have a female faucet.
You’ll need the exact opposite faucet adapter of what faucet you have.
Step 3: Find the Right Faucet Adapter
There are many different types of faucet adapters. For example, male/female, male/male, female/female, and female/male are some of them.
You can also choose to install a new faucet that fits with the faucet adapter. But for that, you’ll have to remove your faucet. But luckily, disassembling a Price Pfister faucet is easy and similar to other faucets.
To get a new faucet adapter, you simply need the faucet aerator. Take the aerator to the nearest store and you’ll find a suitable adapter.
If there’s no adapter that fits with your faucet, you’ll need a new faucet.
What is the standard faucet thread size?
Usually, there aren’t any standard thread sizes. Because there are a lot of faucet types. But in most cases, you’ll have 15/16-inch male faucets. Female faucets tend to be about 55/64-inches wide. Your faucet can have threads inside or outside depending on the type.
What does a dishwasher coupler do?
A dishwasher coupler supplies water to the dishwasher. It contains a filter that can stop dirt or debris from entering the dishwasher. You connect the coupler to a faucet via a faucet adapter for uninterrupted water flow. They usually have a female thread so that it can fit most faucet adapters.
What is an adapter for a dishwasher?
A dishwasher adapter is a device that comes with a dishwasher. It looks like a regular faucet aerator and also acts like one. It replaces the usual faucet aerator to enable connection with other appliances. In easy words, it’s an aerator that has a thread outside/inside.
Do you need a special faucet for the portable dishwasher?
You may need a special faucet for the portable dishwasher. Because portable dishwasher couplers are built to fit in any faucets. But that’s only possible if you have a faucet with a threaded spout. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to get a threaded spout or new faucet.
Should water come out of the dishwasher air gap?
No, water should not be coming out of the dishwasher air gap. It’s actually quite uncommon. But if it happens, it may indicate some problems. For example, you may have forgotten to run the garbage disposal. Water coming out of the dishwasher usually indicates a restricted water flow.
And we’re almost at the end! That was everything I could deliver on the dishwasher faucet adapter. I hope all of this information was helpful to get you some insights on faucet adapters.
If all of that seems bothersome, don’t hesitate to hire an expert. They’ll determine the faucet thread and install a perfect adapter.
Finally, have a nice day!
