Rugs or carpets can easily crease themselves at any time. It happens due to rugs being wet. But there are ways to get the creases out. You’ve to know them before you apply the techniques.

How to get creases out of rugs?

You can first try reverse folding before everything else. It’s the most effective option. After that, try putting some weight on the creased area. Ironing also helps a lot in removing the creases. But it requires a lot of electricity. If you live in warm weather, you can take advantage of sunlight too.

Anyways, that was nothing but just a short answer. Keep reading if you want to know more about the methods.

Let’s get started!

Why Do Rugs Wrinkle?

Rugs creasing out is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it’s super common. But before we head into the main discussion, let’s look at the reasons first.

This way you can avoid getting your rugs getting creased in the near future. It’s the same for your grout as well. To fix your blotchy grout, you need to know what causes it.

Reason 1: Keeping the Rugs Folded

Rugs can develop signs or marks if you keep them folded. If the rug is folded for at least 2 hours, it can develop crease marks.

It’ll take significantly less time if the rugs are wet. Keeping a wet rug folded is one of the worst things you can do.

Reason 2: Humidity Of the Air

Another reason behind the rugs getting folded is the overall humidity. Sometimes there can be too much moisture in the surrounding air.

This will cause your rugs to automatically develop signs of creasing.

Reason 3: Cleaning With Water

Cleaning sometimes can be difficult and has side effects. Like, if you clean a polyester couch, you don’t have to worry about anything. They don’t wrinkle or shrink. But sadly rugs aren’t like that.

Rugs can’t endure water at all. It can shrink easily while in contact with water. Because of that, it may create signs of creasing on the rug.

Reason 4: Dragging Heavy Items

Try to remember if you dragged anything heavy recently. Because that’s a solid reason behind that mark on your rug.

When you drag something heavy, it’ll always leave a mark no matter what. Over time your rug may start buckling.

Reason 5: Incorrect Installation or Placement

Have you installed your rugs correctly? Because if not, it can cause wrinkles all over your rug.

That’s why the proper calculation is always important when installing a rug. Inspect the rugs again. Check if there’s anything that’s messing with the rugs.

At the end of the day, it can be either of these problems. Moreover, like everything else, rugs can always be washed, there’s no doubt. But make sure, you’re washing it safely.

Get Rid Of Creases From Rugs: 3 Methods

So far we’ve only discussed the reasons behind the creasing of the rugs. Hopefully, it’ll help you prevent wrinkles in the future.

But now let’s talk about how to remove those annoying crease marks. Luckily, all the methods are super easy and take only 5-10 minutes.

Method 1: Fold the Rug In Reverse

The most effective option of all. This is the first method you should always try. Reverse folding can solve the creasing almost all the time.

Take the rugs first and flip them in the opposite direction. If it’s a new rug, lay it flat on the ground.

Determine where the creases are afterward. You can do it by simply running your hand around. Flip it when you’re done.

Start rolling the rug tightly with the crease facing outside. Keep the rug in that state for 5-10 minutes. After that, backroll the rugs and check if creases are gone or not.

If you have a friend, this is the best time to call them. This job becomes super easy with two people.

Method 2: Put Some Weights On Creased Area

Whether you’re using a regular cleaner or an abrasive cleaner, rugs may get wrinkles. But it’s not always possible to get the rug and roll it in reverse.

This is where putting on weights shine the most. Grab anything heavy that you got. It can be a book or anything that’s completely flat. If you’re putting books, put multiple books to increase the weight.

There’s one more thing that you can do. If you’re renovating or redesigning, you can place the furniture on creases. This will hide the wrinkles right away.

Make sure to flatten the rug before you place anything with a lot of weight on it. If the crease still exists after 3-4 days, spray some water on the area. Place the weights and wait for 2-3 days again.

Remember, if the rug is thick, it may take more time to remove the creases. That’s why don’t lose patience and just wait it out.

Method 3: Ironing

Ironing is another method but it requires iron. But you’ve to pay some extra electricity bills in this method.

But there’s one positive thing about this. This procedure takes the lowest amount of time and it works! If you’re short on time and need a solution fast, you can walk this path.

For this, you’re going to need two things. We’ve already mentioned the iron. The other one is a towel. Do not iron the rug directly!

Just place a thick towel on the iron. After that, apply a little bit of water to the towel. Take the iron and start ironing. Gradually apply the pressure on the towel.

The heat then will be transferred to the rug. This way you’ll get rid of the wrinkles in no time.

Method 4: Sunlight

This is the longest and most effortless method. If you have time, this process is for you.

For this, you’ll also need warm weather. The temperature is around 22 to 30 degrees celsius for this to work out.

Sunlight will warm the rug and the moistures will get soaked. Just hang the rug on the balcony or anywhere where the sun can reach all day. This process can take at least 2 full days depending on the wrinkles.

Lastly, make sure you’re washing your rugs with safe cleaners. Refrain from using abrasive cleaners or anything that’s harsh.

For rugs, detergents are a good choice. After washing you can vacuum the rug by yourself. Leave it under sunlight to dry it out.
