Not sure how to do that? Do not worry, we got you covered!

How to install a ceiling fan where no fixture exists?

To install a ceiling fan we need to disconnect the electric supply first. After that, we must disconnect the electric supply, and identify the spot of the ceiling fan. Install the electrical box and do the wiring going to the ceiling fan. Finally, mount the fan on the ceiling and test if it works.

This project can be a little tough for you if you don’t know all the details. We have a step-by-step process for the installation. Read along if you wish to know more!

Without further ado, let’s jump in!

Factors To Consider Before Installing A Ceiling Fan Without Fixtures

Installing a ceiling fan could be a difficult task to carry out on your own. Even more, if you don’t have an attic ventilation fan or ridge vent. And thus you’re installing a ceiling fan.

Before you start, there are a lot of things that you need to consider. It’s okay if you’re unaware of those, we’ll enlighten you on this a little.

Below are some of the factors that might help you to make the job easier.

Measure The Size And Weight Of The Ceiling Fan

The weight of the ceiling fans varies by model. Some ceiling fans are around 15 pounds and some are around 50 pounds. Before installation, try to know whether the ceiling could carry the fan or not.

The size of the fan also varies a lot. The size determines whether the ceiling fan could be placed in the right spot or not.

For example, for 12 ft, you have to have at least a 36 inches ceiling. As it will cover the entire room. For a 15 feet room, use a fan that is 42 inches in diameter.

Cost Of Ceiling Fan

The cost of the ceiling fan actually depends on how you are going to install it. If you take the help of professionals then the cost will go up.

Installing the ceiling fan is not very expensive and will cost $75-$100. But if you take professional assistance then the cost can go up to $200.

The cost further increases to $280 if you have to additionally install an electric box.

Safety Measures

Safety measures must be taken even before the start of the procedure. On the other hand, tools are necessary for the installation and testing process.

Safety measures like disconnecting the electric supply are necessary. Also wearing safety gloves and masks are needed to protect ourselves from any risk. There are several risks like getting an electric shock, a sharp surface of an object getting in the skin, or a heavy object falling on feet.

How to Install a Ceiling Fan Without Fixtures? 5 Steps To Follow

Installing a ceiling fan with no fixtures can sound complicated. It may even be complicated if you don’t know the whole process. We have prepared a detailed installation procedure for you. This will make your work easier and more convenient.

Given below is the easy 5 step guide for you to have a detailed breakdown-

Tools Required

Before you begin the installation process, gather up all the tools you need. Here’s what you’ll be needing for this procedure-

  • Hammer
  • Hole Saw
  • Screwdrivers
  • Ladder
  • Gloves
  • Mask
  • Voltage Tester

Got all the tools ready? Let’s start installing the fan then!

Step 1 of 5: Disconnect The Electrical Supply

Disconnecting the electrical supply would help protect you from electrocution. Locate the electric supply that will be connected to the ceiling fan.

Whether it’s the circuit breaker or the mains electric supply does not matter. Just turn it off before you proceed to install the ceiling fan.

Hence, the spot will be accessible and the wiring will be safe to use.

Step 2 of 5: Identify The Spot

When you know the right spot for the fan, determine whether the ceiling can withstand at least 15 to 50 pounds or not. Most of the time the safest spot is the center of the ceiling. But you can place wherever you like as long as it’s safe.

The ceiling spot must support two joists so that the ceiling fan can be installed. After you decide to identify the place of ceiling fan placement, mark the spot. Holes of Joists will be cut for wire placement. This is similar to cutting holes in joists for ducts.

Dig a hole using the hole saw and there you have it.

Use a quality saw for this job. Here are our top choices of hole saw in case you need one. Check these out-

You’ll certainly be satisfied with their longevity and performance.

Step 3 of 5: Installing The Electrical Box

The electric box of the ceiling fan and the switch which will control must be installed. These should be installed after finishing the wires.

If there is one joist then the electrical box can be nailed into it. If there is more than one joist then brace and saddle come into play. Cut a hole between the joists before you push the brace inside. And then connect it to the joists.

The electric box should be attached to the brace. Make sure that the brace completely supports the joists before installation.

Insert the prongs on the end of the brace into the joists. Pick your bracket and attach screws using a screwdriver. Position the bracket on the brace in a way that the screws are facing outwards.

You can start inserting the wires after this is done. But do make sure that you’re using the right wires for your fans and lights. Alternatively, you can use a saddle that should be over the brace before you start wiring.

Step 4 of 5: Arranging The Wires

Make sure to check the electrical current on wires using a voltage tester. Before the wiring process, install a switch that will control the ceiling fan.

This wire goes through the switch and the ceiling spot on which we will run the fan. The fish tape is highly recommended to use to avoid drilling unnecessary holes.

Attach the wire to the electrical tape. Then start fishing the wires from the switch and into the ceiling spot. Staple the wires to the joists and do it over the cables.

Do not staple through the wire because it might cause a safety risk. As it can cause a fire from a short circuit. Do check if your wires in the switch are connected to the ground wire for safety. Also, make sure that the ground wire is connected to fan wires as well.

Step 5 of 5: Mount The Ceiling Fan And Test It

Once the above steps are done, you are ready to mount the ceiling fan. The instruction manual for the ceiling fan is provided in the package.

Follow the instruction manual that will guide you completely on mounting the ceiling fan safely. Wear safety equipment like masks and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.

Use a ladder to climb and reach the ceiling safely.  Do not use anything else for climbing because the ladder is the safest option.

Finally, test the ceiling fan whether it works or not. If it works then you are good to go and if it does not work then look what went wrong. We would recommend you consult an electrician.

That ends our discussion today. We tried to explain all the steps in detail in the easiest way possible. We hope this guide will be helpful for you!
