How To Remove Molds From Bathroom Popcorn Ceiling? 5 Simple Steps
Molds appear in different shapes and colors. And similar to mold, soot also appears on your ceiling. They look almost the same. It’s ideal that you learn to identify soot from mold.
If it’s mold, there you have our stepwise guide to remove it below.
Tools You Need
Before you start the removing process, assemble all the things you need. Here are the tools you require-
- Spray bottle
- Liquid dish soap
- Anti-fungal solution
- Microfiber cloth
Once you have all the materials ready at your disposal, let’s get to work.
Step 1: Washing The Ceiling
Take your ladder and position it over the area where there’s mold. Mix detergent in warm water and make sure it is mixed properly.
Before spraying, kill any existing spiders on the ceiling to avoid any harm to you.
Fill the spray bottle with the mixture and start spraying it all over the mold. You’ll have to wait and let it sit for a while. At least until it has dried. This will loosen the mold from the texture of your popcorn ceiling.
And the mold losing up means it’ll be easier for you to remove it. It’s okay if you don’t wear protective wear for this process. Make sure to wear them from the next step though.
Step 2: Applying The Anti-Fungal Solution
Pour the detergent water out of the spray bottle. It’s time for you to pour in the anti-fungal solution in the spray bottle.
Spray the anti-fungal solution all over the mold-affected parts. Then use the microfiber cloth or a sponge to dab on the molds. Dabbing them will let the solution get into the cracks and cores of the molds.
Let it sit for 30 minutes. The anti-fungal will have done its job within that time. After that, you’ll be able to focus on cleaning the mold.
Step 3: Cleaning The Mold
Take a clean piece of cloth and some fresh water. Splash water on the mold and remove them using the cloth again and again.
Or you could just dip the cloth in freshwater and remove the mold. But, make sure the cloth is clean or is cleaned through the whole process.
If you still can’t get rid of it completely, repeat steps 1 to 3 until the mold is gone.
Step 4: Eliminating The Residual Spores
Even after you think you’ve cleaned the mold completely, there’ll still be some residues. Bacteria and mold spores are present. It’s possible that you won’t be able to notice them with your naked eye.
You can use a stronger detergent for this process. However, if you want to be extra cautious, use bleach. Pour the bleach on the spray bottle and get ready to spray it.
Don’t worry if your bathroom smells like bleach after cleaning. It’s a piece of cake to get rid of the odor.
Make sure you’re wearing your goggles and mask. You should wear rubber gloves as well now. Bleach can cause irritation when it comes in touch with the skin. It can even burn your skin.
Spray the bleach all over the mold-affected parts. Don’t rinse or clean the area right away though. Wait until it has dried and then wash it off.
Step 5: Patching Up And Painting (Optional Step)
Don’t think about painting your ceiling until you’re completely done with mold removal and cleanup. Also, wait until your ceiling has totally dried out.
Once everything is done, do a touch-up of the ceiling first. Do some patching with a proper finish using a textured spray. And then you can paint your ceiling again.
Also, don’t go off changing bulb in flush mount ceiling light in the middle of the process. It’s best if you don’t change even before the mold removal process. There’s a small risk of water affecting the connections there.
This part is optional since whether or not you paint is entirely up to you. If you wanna paint your ceiling and apply some popcorn texture, you can do it. But you’re not obligated to do it.
Also, while you’re cleaning mold from the ceiling, remove it from your shower tiles as well. Otherwise, you may need to regrout the shower if the mold grows out of control.
Removing Mold Using Vinegar
White vinegar can be called one of the best agents for cleaning or disinfecting. If you don’t want to use soap, this is an excellent alternative. The pH level of vinegar is 2.5. Which makes it pretty acidic and perfect for cleaning.
You’ll need a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide solution. About 3% should do the trick. Combine it with vinegar and water in a spray bottle. You can add baking soda for a better result.
The water can make the solution slightly less effective. You can omit it if you like, but vinegar evaporates quickly. The water is there to hold it there for a while.
Once you spray the mixture, let it sit until it has dried up. Then follow step 3 from before to clean the ceiling properly. Let the ceiling dry after that and you’re done.
Regular Maintenance To Prevent Mold
Popcorn ceilings are great at gathering dust. It’s the nature of their texture after all. And this dust is just the first step to the gathering of mold.
Dust carries mold spores. And when those spores come in contact with water, they start growing. Regular cleaning of dust can help you keep a mold-free ceiling.
To clear the dust, you could use two different tools. A cobweb duster or soft bristle brush is one of them. You could use a ladder to reach the ceiling. Or, you could attach the soft bristle brush to a long pole and get the job done.
A small vacuum cleaner or a mini vacuum cleaner is another tool. But you’ll need a ladder to use the vacuum cleaner anyway. Before you start cleaning, wear a mask and long-sleeved clothes.
Here’s a list of some of the best vacuum cleaners available in the market-
There’s no furniture in your bathroom so you don’t need to cover anything. But you should take your toothbrushes out of the bathroom.
First, use the soft bristle brush to remove the loose specks of dust. And then use the vacuum cleaner to suck the rest of them in. Do this maintenance every few days to keep your popcorn ceiling mold-free.

Exhaust fans are great at sucking out the air. They may appear to be an added expenditure, yet they are really beneficial.
Water leaks are one of the major reasons behind mold formation. There’re pipes all over the walls of our bathrooms. Even if one of them has a very small leak, mold can grow over time. Besides, you could get damped walls from pipe leaks.
Check for pipe leaks when there’s a sudden mold outbreak. They’re usually concentrated in one area.
