3 Home Repairs You Can Do It Yourself!

Here’s a list of potential home maintenance problems you may face. You can try the steps below to repair them-

Problem 1: Fix Your Leaky Pipe

Leaky pipes are really common in our households. But when you see a leakage in your pipe, it’s not necessary to call the plumber right away. You can always try to fix the problem yourself with the help of some necessary tools.

This saves your money and you’ll learn a new but useful thing.

Solution

There is obviously an easy way to solve this issue. Let’s quickly check out how to fix the leakage in your house pipes.

Step 1: Identify the source of the leak

Check all pipes and edges to find the source. Look for water pooling in an area. You may also hear water running in pipes but find no leak. You can check your water meter to ensure where the source is.

Step 2: Fix the Coupling Nut

The pipe in your kitchen or bathroom may have a crack that is causing the leak. But there’s a really common reason for leaks. That’s- the coupling nut that connects the pipes, becoming loose.

To solve this, tighten the connection nut with a wrench. If this doesn’t solve your problem, you can fix it with plumbers tape.

Step 3: Apply Tape Around the Leak

The leak persists after tightening the coupling nut. In that case, the seals in the pipe threads may have deteriorated or no longer be functional.

You can use plumbers tape or self-fusing silicone tape to fix this. They are an efficient sealant for providing leak relief for some time.

Here’s how to do it-

  • Remove the coupling nut that connects the P trap to the pipe draining.
  • Remove the P trap from the draining pipe by loosening the other coupling nut.
  • Put a length of plumber’s tape over the pipe threads according to the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Replace the P trap well with a draining pipe. Reconnect the pipes and the coupling nut.
  • Screw the coupling nuts. You can now run the water to see if the sealant works.

You can use this silicone tape trick to fix your kitchen sink leakage. Just use the self fusing silicone tape around the cracked areas. That’s all!

Problem 2: Clogged Gutters

Sometimes you might face difficulties in your home due to clogged gutters. It can create a leak into the basement and deep beneath the siding. As a result, a significant mold takes place in those areas.

Solution

Don’t get worried now! Because this problem is totally fixable.

Step 1: Create a Cleaning Solution

All you need is a simple combination of water and white vinegar. This solution cleans the exterior of your gutters effectively. Plus the solution isn’t harmful. As a result, it will not damage metal like abrasive cleaners

Step 2: Use a Ladder

You need a ladder now. Because you have to get up there and clean the clogged area.

But make sure someone is keeping your ladder steady.

Step 3: Scoop the Gunk and Spray

Use a plastic scoop to get rid of the gunky material. Scoop carefully. Don’t leave anything behind.

Once done, flush the gutters and downspouts with a garden hose. This will remove any leftover debris.

Problem 3: Stuck Window

This is another common issue in a household. Sometimes we just forget to open a window or we just don’t have to open it. This eventually makes the window really hard to open up.

The reasons behind this problem can be many. We’ve explained all of them.

Solution

As there are 3 different reasons behind this so a step-by-step guide can make things complicated. That’s why we wanted to give you a brief idea.

Dirty Window

If your window is stuck due to dirt, simply cleaning the window will solve the problem. You can use vinegar, dishwashing soap to do this. Use a scrubbing brush to scrub the dirt away!

Warmed Window Frame

But if your window is stuck due to a warped frame, you must seek help from an expert. Once the warped wood is fixed, you must prevent the wood from warping again.

Painted-Stuck Window

Using your putty knife between your frame and window can be helpful. Just wriggle your putty knife back and forth. This way you can loosen the dried paint there. Make sure to go around your window’s entire edge with the knife.

If this doesn’t work, use a hammer. Just hammer the window’s edge. This will loosen and break the seal which the paint created.

Still, failed? In that case, use a paint thinner. But don’t use acetone, there’s a clear difference between paint thinner and acetone. WD-40 is another solution. But it can’t be used on vinyl windows.

That’s it!
