Ungrounded outlets, a common issue people regularly face in old houses. In most scenarios, you are still stuck with old-fashioned 2-prong outlets. Or maybe someone placed 3-pronged outlets (Contain no ground wire).
What to do when there is no ground wire in the outlet?
There are some steps to perform to ground your outlet. Check the local electrical codes and schedule inspections firstly. Check the receptacles with a circuit tester afterward. Further, detach the receptacle and examine the wire. Attach the grounding wire now. You should attach it along with the grounding terminal and secure the receptacle.

Is Grounding Wire Necessary?
You can often find some old homes where there will be 2-prong receptacles or outlets. These outlets don’t have any base connection with ground to Earth.
But there is a meaningful necessity for grounding wire. Mainly, providing surplus electrical charges is a safe place to go.
A grounded wire in your outlet assists the positive charges to reach the ground safely. It shows a direct way out in a controlled way.
Luckily, you can resolve the grounding wire by yourself. It’s a comparatively easy task when you have the proper preparation and instructions. In addition, it will save you as you saved the cost of hiring an expensive electrician.

How to Ground An Outlet?
As I’ve already mentioned, the grounding wire process is quite big and time-consuming. As a result, I’ve divided the task into 5-steps.
It will make your workflow quite easier and understandable. Let’s just head right in-
Step 01: Observe Local Electrical Codes
When you’re doing any sort of electrical work, you’ll need some inspections and permits. For that, you have to study your local codes and schedule inspections. If the rule matches your circumstances, you begin the process.
If you’re staying in a home for a single-family, you can do it by yourself. Just check the local wiring codes then. Find out if a 3-prong GFCI is acceptable for ungrounded 2-prong outlets.
Remember, the NEC demands all GFCIs in a length of 1.5 meters. This will be measured depending on the floor for being tamper-resistant along with clearly marked.
Step 02: Test The Outlet
Your second task is testing the outlet. For that, you’ll need to get yourself a circuit tester.
A circuit tester is used to indicate different problems in a receptacle. There are several circuit testers available in the local market.
You can choose any of them from the list-
These testers are similar to the tester used while stretching welded wire fences. Pick any of these hassle-freely.
Anyways, plug the tester into each receptacle and observe the lights now. When the red lights indicate any outlet isn’t grounded properly, mark that outlet with masking tape.
Also, try fixing one receptacle at a time. Or else the electrical circuit breaker will be on and off several times.
Step 03: Examine The Receptacle and The Wiring
To examine the receptacle and wires, you have to turn off the main electrical box. Remove the cover plate of the outlet using a flathead screwdriver afterward. Unscrew all the mounting screws next and remove the receptacle.
Cautiously bring out the outlet from the box now. There you’ll notice a green grounding screw at the bottom part of the outlet.
You’ll now examine the grounding wire. For that, you need to observe a few details.
Such as, if the wiring has only two wires (black and white). This indicates your box isn’t grounded.
Secondly, the GFCI receptacles can’t safeguard sensitive electronics. Whereas, the grounding wires can.
Finally, search for a separate ground wire which probably exists inside the outlet. As per the NEC, there’s a built-in ground for GFCI receptacles.
If so, you just need to reconnect the ground wire and secure it with proper tools.
Step 04: Grounding The Receptacle
It’s time to attach your grounding wire to your terminal. Hopefully, you’ve found the ground wire inside the box.
Sometimes your grounding wire may become loose or get disconnected. In that case, make a loop over the green terminal and secure them with a screwdriver.
Conduct the same Phillips screwdriver used while removing backstab wires. Create another loop at the end part of the copper wire using needle-nose pliers. It will protect the wire onto the screw.
Be cautious while placing the wire on the terminal screw. You have to tighten the screw, not push them out of the terminal.
Anyways, while working on a GFCI receptacle, remember one thing. That’s to connect the ground wire with two “line” terminals.
Don’t forget to recheck the wires as well. Black wire marked as “Hot” is fastened with the brass terminal.
On the other hand, white wire, labeled as “Neutral”, is placed in the silver terminal. Mainly, you have to ensure that any other connections inside the box are securely tightened.
This way your grounding wire session is accomplished.
Step 05: Secure The Outlet and Turn On The Power
Wrap the outlet with electrical tape now and cover the terminals. Shove back the receptacle inside the box and fold the wires carefully.
Secure them with mounting screws now. Put back the cover plate and tighten it correctly afterward.
The final task is to turn on the power line. Try to retest the outlet with a circuit tester. This way you can ensure that you’ve grounded the receptacle properly.
Avoid Unsafe Practices
There are a few mistakes people make while grounding wires in outlets. You must not do the same unsafe practices.
Have a look at what you should avoid-
- Do not use any 3-wire type grounded electrical outlet over a 2-wire ungrounded circuit.
- Do not reverse the polarity of the hot and neutral wires.
- Do not extend or add circuits, or wires to an existing two-wire knob and tube electrical circuit.
Try to follow these don’ts as it’s a matter of your house safety. Some people do these unsafe practices while wiring a duct booster fan to their blower as well.
Avoid these mistakes or your family might face electrical accidents at any time.
Question: Is it safe to not have any ground wire?
Answer: No, you will face two types of consequences. When the wire isn’t grounded to the Earth, zero voltage won’t find any ground reference. Hence, irregular and inconvenient voltages will take place. Also, unwanted fault currents won’t get any exit point to the path back.
Question: Can I install a 3-prong outlet without grounding?
Answer: Yes, you can. Yet there will be risks for electrical damage and shocks with non-grounded 3-prong outlets. It may also cause electrocution and appliance damage as well.
Question: Can I install a light switch without a ground?
Answer: Yes, you can. There is no such issue to install a light switch without ground. But dimmers require a ground wire compulsorily. Unless it’ll create unnecessary electrical issues and will create an irregular flow of voltage.
