Let’s get into it!

How to Pick a Kwikset Lock? 4 Different Methods to Follow

Different kinds of locks and locksets are manufactured by the company. But breaking into keypad door locks will take more than just lock picking. The electronic security sets are known to be pick proof.

Most of the other locks like the deadbolt knobs use the pin tumbler mechanism. The pin tumbler lock contains pins of different lengths. That prevents the lock from being unlocked without the right key. This is applicable for almost 90% of the locks commonly used worldwide.

Kwikset locks aren’t very difficult to pick even for the amateurs. Before we start the picking process we need to understand how the lock functions.

How a Kwikset Lock Works?

This lock functions by matching the cuts on the key with the pins inside the cylinder plug. Each lock in a 5-pin system has two sets of five pins over a set of springs. The bottom pins vary in length and are tapered on both ends.

When the correct key is inserted, the pins are forced to line up and form a shear line. That removes the trap from the pins and the lock gets unlocked.

Now that we know the functions of the lock, let’s look at the methods that we can apply to pick a Kwikset lock.

Method 1: Using a Tension Wrench and a Hook

All you’ll need for this method is a tension wrench and a hook. Follow the steps below accordingly and your lock will be picked in no time.

First put the tension wrench inside the lock. Then put the hook right over the tension wrench and pull the front pin out of the way. Insert the hook inside the lock to feel the pins.

Incase you don’t own a tension wrench, take a look at our suggestions below-

These are quite strong and flexible. You’ll not be disappointed while working with these.

Now, push the pins upwards with the hook. When a pin is in place, use the wrench to secure its position. Repeat this process for each of the pins.

After all the pins are secured, twist the tension wrench like a key to unlock the lock.

Try focusing on the pin alignment more than randomly rattling the lock. It is one of the most simple ways to pick a Kwikset lock.

Method 2: Using Paperclips

Picking a kwikset lock requires the same efforts as opening a locked sliding glass door. And both can be done quite easily.

For this method, you’ll need 2 paper clips for this method. This can be a lifesaver if you’re somewhere and you don’t have proper tools. Let’s go through the steps-

Begin by bending one paper clip straight such that it works like a straight wire. Make a ‘U‘ shaped loop in the middle. And then squeeze the loop to make it as slim as possible.

Now, put the look inside the lock about half centimeters deep. Then, bend the paperclip 100-110 degrees to make a tensioning tool. Take another paperclip and bend out one end of the clip. This thin end will work as a hook.

Keep the tensioning tool on the bottom end of the lock hole. Then insert the hook right over the tensioning tool and start picking the pins one by one. Keep gentle tension on the tensioning tool.

When all the pins are in place, the lock will be unlocked.

Don’t put too much tension on the tool. Gentle tension is enough to twist the lock.

Method 3: Using Bobby Pins

You can pick a Kwikset lock just with the help of a bobby pin out of your hair. Here’s how to do so-

First of all, bend a bobby pin 100-110 degrees to replicate a tensioning tool. Take another bobby pin and pull its ends apart to make it straight.

Then, put the tensioning tool you just made half centimeters inside the lock. Insert one leg of the straight bobby pin and use it as a hook. Feel the pins inside the lock and try pushing them up into place. Secure the positions of the pin with the tensioning tool.

Repeat this process for each pin inside the clock.

Once all the pins have formed the shear line, gently twist the tensioning tool. That should unlock the lock.

These methods will work on most of the regular day-to-day use locks. You can use these to unlock a bedroom door without a key. Keep trying if you don’t succeed the first time. A few attempts should get you there.

Method 4: Using a Thin Wire

This method is not the most effective one. But if you don’t have access to any of the tools mentioned above, you can give it a go. This works on doors that have handles. These are locked by a small button placed on the handle.

Hammer a thin wire through the keyhole as deep as you can. Then, twist it in different directions. Keep doing this until it catches a groove to open the lock.

That’s all we had on lockpicking today. We hope this guide will help you through the procedure.
