Can You Use Plumbers Putty On Plastic Drains? [Yes Or No]

Plastic drain leakage can be a pretty annoying issue. To seal the leakage, you might want to use a good sealant. This is when you’ll be thinking of plumbers putty

Can you use plumbers putty on plastic drains?

It’s better not to. Because The plumber’s putty might attack the chrome plating of the plastic drain. This is why plumbers’ putty is not made to be used on plastic. That’s why you shouldn’t use plumbers putty. Instead, you can use fiberglass resin tape, epoxy, etc.

The above information is not enough. You need to know how to seal leaks properly. That’s why we’ve explained what else you can use instead of plumbers putty.

This is why you should give our piece a try!

Reasons For Plastic Drain Leaks

These are three common causes of your plastic drain leakage. But you should also be aware of the water pressure regulator problem. Because sometimes extreme water pressure can also damage the plastic drain. Now the reasons for water leaking are shown below-

Improper Installation

The leak of water might occur due to not installing it properly. If the plastic drain is not joined with the joining pipes. Then it will cause loose-fitting and the water will leak eventually.

Using The Wrong Glue

Glues are basically used to connect plastic drain pipes at their joints. Before you join the plastic drain pipes, know which glue can be used and which can’t be used.

All glues available in the market don’t work in the same manner. You need to use the right one while installing the pipe

Extreme Freezing Temperature

You might live in an area where the temperature goes down really low. This might cause the plastic drain to get damaged and leak water. You can insulate your pipe to prevent it from happening.

These are the most common causes that might cause plastic leakage. Find your cause and try to prevent it earlier.

What Can Be Used On Plastic Drain Instead Of Plumbers Putty?

There are many components that can be used. We suggest you use fiberglass resin tape, epoxy, rubber, and silicone repair tape. These will help you to stop the leakage.

Fiberglass Resin Tape

Fiberglass resin tape is a very good solution. You can use it on the leakage area and it will be able to handle the water pressure. But how to use it?

Before the steps let us show you two of our top favorites.

These are our choices that will be the best option for you. Do check them out.

The steps are mentioned below-

Step 1 of 2: Clean The Leak Spot

Before using the tape you have to make sure the leak spot is cleaned.  You can clean it using a rug or a cloth. But remember you can’t use any abrasive cleaner for this. Because it can damage the plastic and create scratch marks.

Use a non-abrasive cleaner and gently remove any dirt or stains. Clean it properly so there won’t be any problems with the tape.

Step 2 of 2: Tape The Damaged Area

It’s time to use the tape now. Use it on the area that’s damaged.

Ensure that you’re tightly applying the tape on the plastic drain. It will take 15 minutes for the resin to settle properly.

Epoxy is basically a type of putty but not exactly a putty. It is a viscous liquid that helps to repair plastic drain pipes.

You need to have a good quality epoxy to work with. That’s why we recommend two epoxies for you to make it easier.

These epoxies will solve your problem. By the way, these epoxies are used for other purposes too.

But one thing to remember, it can’t be applied to high water pressure damages. Anyway, let’s take a look at the steps-

Step 1 of 2: Clean The Leakage Area

Clean the leakage properly first. There should be no other type of dust or anything. Because it might not let the epoxy hold properly.

Step 2 of 2: Apply the Epoxy

In this step, you have to read the manufacturer’s manual to apply it. You can mix the epoxy with putty before applying it.

Let it settle for 10 minutes afterward. It will stop the water leakage.

Silicone And Rubber Repair Tape

For a simple solution, you can use silicon and rubber tape. Like any other tape, they come in a roll and are easy to apply.

You can buy any silicone and rubber repair tape. But we recommend you to buy two of our favorites.

These tapes are definitely the best available in today’s market.

Step 1 of 2: Wrap The Tape Into the Leak

You have to wrap the tape in the damaged spot tightly first. This way the water force will get low. But it will not completely stop the flow.

Step 2 of 2: Wrap The Tape Around The Leak Spot

You need to wrap it around the damaged spot too. Because the water might still be leaking. Again wrap it around the damaged spot.

These are the alternative solutions to plumber putty. You can apply any of them depending on the water pressure or leakage.

If all of these don’t work you might have to change your plastic drain pipe. There are various types of PVC pipe in the market.

Question: Which one can stand higher water pressure between plumber putty or Teflon plumbers tape?

Answer: Teflon tape provides a reliable seal on threaded pipe joints for high-pressure liquids. And plumber’s putty can be used as a flexible caulk. Plumbers putty can resist water when required, but it cannot withstand high pressure.

Question: Is it necessary to let the plumber’s putty dry?

Answer: After applying the plumber’s putty. You can use the sink drain or faucet right away. Because it does not dry, there is no drying period. It simply closes the gaps. And the sink, drain, or faucet, can be used immediately after the plumber’s putty is applied.

Question: Is it easy to remove the plumber’s putty?

Answer: One of the reasons plumber’s putty is so popular is its ease of removal. Because it is not adhesive. It may be removed from parts much more easily than alternatives such as silicone. All you have to do after it’s dry is press down on a plumbing junction.

Hope now you know why you can’t use plumbers putty on plastic drains. The plumber’s putty is a very old technique that plumbers use.

But it doesn’t work against high water pressure. This is why we hope you’ll go for the alternatives we’ve mentioned.

Good luck!
