Light sockets cannot carry as much current as normal sockets. Light sockets can generally carry 60 watts. That’s why you can’t use appliances above that range.

If you do so, the socket transmits a higher amount of current than it can handle. This leads to it overheating, which melts internal components of the socket. A similar situation occurs in furnaces overheating.

This is risky because overheating can cause the socket to blow up and cause a fire. This is why the socket can’t be used with appliances that require too much power.

But if you use it on appliances like phones, laptops, and lamps, there’s no risk. Because they don’t require much power. It’s only unsafe with heavy-duty appliances like washing machines, space heaters, etc.

Light sockets can pose a significant threat when used in improper locations. I have discussed the two most common locations for you-

Ceilings

Most people opt for turning light sockets into outlets. This is because they don’t have enough outlets in the area. But the problem arises when consumers attempt to convert ceiling light sockets into outlets.

Gravity is an issue of converting light sockets to outlets. Electric plugs attached to light sockets can fall out. 

This is because the plugs become loose over time. As a result, they partially or fully fall down. This causes an arcing problem. 

You have to ensure that the plugs are secured firmly if you convert ceiling sockets to outlets. You can use electrical tapes to brace the plugs firmly to the outlet. You can even use Teflon tape that’s used on a sprinkler’s head.

Outdoors

I would highly recommend not to use light socket adapters outdoors. At least not permanently. 

If Light socket adapters are exposed to rain or snow, it can cause it to burst. This causes risk of fires and electrocution. 

But you can temporarily use it outside if you’re sure it won’t rain or snow. That’s why if you’re looking to enjoy a birthday or Christmas outdoors, check the weather forecast!

Empty Light Socket Adapters

In my experience, it’s always best not to leave a light socket empty. Although they can be left empty, it poses a number of threats. Contact points in light sockets transmit electricity.

Unlike outlets, light sockets have contact points that are bare and open. That’s why an unsuspecting person can mistakenly touch it and get electrocuted.

If dust and lint accumulate in the empty socket, there’s a huge risk of erupting a fire. Pets are also at a risk. If it goes too close. It can die of electrocution. Contact with paper or clothing can also cause a fire. 

That’s why it’s best to store those safely away from the sockets.

If you don’t want your house to go up in flames, consider converting empty sockets to outlets.

Outlets have contact points but these aren’t visible. Only professionals can reach them. This makes it much safer than empty light sockets adapters.

To use the light socket safely, you might want to turn it into an outlet. That’s why in this segment, I want to tell you just that. Here are the steps on how you can safely turn the light socket into an outlet-

Step 1: Disconnect Your Light Socket 

You have to first cut off the power from your light socket. To do that, disconnect the light socket from any power source. 

Turn off the light switch along with flip “OFF” your circuit breaker. Once done, check to be sure the power is off by using a tester.

Step 2: Remove Your Bulb to Install Adapter

You now have to start removing the bulb. Once finished, start installing the adapter. 

You can do it by turning the adapter in a clockwise position. It’s just like screwing any bulb into its place. 

If you want, you can even replace your light fixture with one receptacle. 

Anyway, this is what you can do if you have any experience. But the process is still really complicated. That’s why I suggest getting help from your nearby electrician.
